17. Why must he also be true God?

That by the power of His Godhead He might bear in His manhood the burden of God's wrath, 1) and so obtain for 2) and restore to us righteousness and life. 3)

1) He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. Isa. 53:8.

Whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death because it was not possible that he should be holden of it Acts 2:24.

2) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16.

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts 20:28.

3) For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us. I John 1:2.
