37. What do you understand by the word "suffered"?

That all the time He lived on earth, but especially at the end of His life, He bore, in body and soul, the wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race; 1) in order that by His suffering, as the only atoning sacrifice,2) He might redeem our body and soul from everlasting damnation, and obtain for us the grace of God, righteousness, and eternal life.

l) Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. I Peter 2:24.

Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isa. 53:12.

2) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. I John 2.2.

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us. and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forebearance of God to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might. be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Rom. 3:25,26.

* I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax, it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me unto the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me, the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and feet. Ps. 22:14-16.

* Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, | even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. Matt. 26: 3)

* For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Rom. 5:6.
