96. What does God require in the second Commandment?

That we in no way make any image of God,1) nor worship Him in any other way than He has commanded us in His Word.2)

1) Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves, for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire: lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male and female. The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air, the likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth; and lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. Deut. 4:15-19.

To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? ... To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. Isa. 40:18,25.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves. Rom. 1:22-24.

Foreasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. Acts 17:29.

2) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king. I Sam. 15:23.

Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, they have done unto their gods, for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods. What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shall not add thereto, nor diminish from it. Deut. 12:30-32.

But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Matt. 15:9.

* Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or a likeness of any thing, which the Lord thy God hath forbidden thee. For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. Deut. 4:23,24.

* God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24.
